Sports Jersey Size Guide: How to Measure the Right Way

Have you ever experienced online shopping and gotten stuck when it comes to choosing a size? Football jerseys are not like regular clothes, and you must choose the correct size to ensure it fits you. While we offer 1 Year old to 5XL sizes, you can also get a custom jersey as per your size requirements.

Let’s learn how you can measure your football jersey size with precision:

Two Reliable Methods to Find Your Perfect Jersey Size

You can measure the ideal size without or with a jersey you might have. Here are the two ways you can get an accurate measurement:

  1. Measure Your Size Using an Old Jersey
  2. Measure Your Size Using Your Body Measurements

Measure Your Size Using an Old Jersey

An old jersey is a quick and easy way to measure your size, but wear it first, and if it fits you, then take its measurements.

Step 1 – Lay the Jersey Flat

Lay your jersey on a flat surface to ensure the correct shape. If your jersey has wrinkles, make sure to iron it so that you won't end up ordering the wrong size. Other than that, you must also close all the buttons and zips, as they can also interfere with the measurements. The image below shows how you should lay your jersey.

Step 2 – Measure the Chest Width

Put the measuring tape where the armpit ends and pull it straight to the other end. This will give you half the size of your chest. If your football jersey is too old or if you have gotten skinnier or gained some weight, subtract or add a few inches accordingly.

Step 3 – Measure the Length

You can measure the length of your jersey either from the top of the neckline or from the shoulders. Just put the start point of your measuring tape at the top point of your jersey and pull it down to the bottom of your shirt. This is the length of the shirt you have.

Step 4 – Compare with Size Charts

Compare the measurements you got with our size chart to find which size fits you the best. If you don't find your ideal size in the chart, you can get a custom football jersey that will fit you perfectly.

Measure Your Size Using Your Body Measurements

If you don't have an old football jersey, don't worry; you can take measurements directly from your body. You should add 2-4 inches to your body measurements to make it equal to a comfortable slim-fit jersey, or add 4-6 inches if you want a more relaxed jersey.

Here’s how you should take your body measurements:

Step 1 – Measure Your Chest

Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it level and snug but not tight. This is typically the most important number for jersey sizing. If you want a tighter or looser shirt, you should write down the measurements accordingly.

Step 2 – Measure Your Shoulder Width

Measure straight across your back from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other. This helps determine how the jersey will sit across your upper body. If you are getting a custom football jersey, you should provide all the measurements to get a perfect size.

Step 4 – Measure Your Torso Length

Measure from the top of your shoulder down to wherever you'd like the jersey to end, typically at the hip or slightly below. For ideal length, measure from the top point of your shoulder to the point where your waistline fits best.

Step 5 – Measure Your Arm Length (for Full-Sleeve Jerseys)

If you're buying a long-sleeve jersey, measure from the shoulder seam down to your wrist to ensure the sleeves land at the right spot. However, if you want longer or shorter sleeves, you can note your measurements accordingly.

Step 6 – Adjust Your Measurements for a Relaxed Fit

When you take measurements directly from your body, it results in a really tight body fit size. If you don’t want that, you can add 2 or 4 inches for a more relaxed fit. Suppose your chest measures 46 inches (body measurement); you can consider a jersey size 48 or 50 inches for a relaxed fit.

Step 7 – Match Measurements to the Size Chart

With all your measurements in hand, compare them to the size chart. If your numbers fall between two sizes, consider whether you prefer a more fitted or relaxed look — sizing up generally gives a looser, more comfortable fit, while sizing down leans athletic and snug.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring over thick clothing, which easily disturbs your measurements
  • Ignoring fabric stretch, especially with performance or stretch-knit jerseys
  • Confusing player-fit sizing with fan-fit sizing, as they follow different size charts entirely
  • Using a really old jersey as a standard for measurement
  • Considering the exact measurements taken from the body, which results in a really tight jersey

Summary:

When ordering a football jersey online, you must choose the correct size to avoid later chaos. You only need a measuring tape, your old jersey, or to take direct measurements of your body. The two most important things to measure are chest and length. If you measure both correctly, you can buy the jersey that fits you the best.
